The New Yorkers' Guide to Cannabis Vapes
Why New York Is Different
New York leads all legal cannabis states in two key metrics: highest average retail prices and one of the highest year-over-year growth rates in the country. Yet despite the state's massive population and second-ranked GDP nationally, sales volume is still surprisingly low relative to its size. After all, New York's population is nearly triple that of Massachusetts, but total cannabis sales are only roughly comparable.
That gap is an opportunity. With 1,074 retail licenses approved but only 499 dispensaries currently open, the market is still in early expansion. The explosive growth seen since legalization is just the beginning.
Prices Are Falling, But Still Premium
Over the past two years, vape prices in New York have dropped almost every single month. The $60–80 range that dominated at launch has given way to a $40–50 mainstream. That said, New York remains one of the priciest markets in the country, and that's not entirely a bad thing. Consumers here are less price-sensitive than in mature markets like California, which means brands invest more in quality. The premium you pay usually reflects something real.
Know the Oil in Your Vape
Three oil types dominate the New York vape case:
Distillate is the most common and most affordable option, consistent and reliable, though lighter on flavor complexity. Live Resin, made from fresh-frozen cannabis, delivers a richer terpene profile and fuller effect, making it the go-to for flavor-focused consumers. Live Rosin is the one to watch: solventless, clean, and accelerating fast, rosin's growth has visibly picked up speed in 2026 and shows no signs of slowing.
Disposable or Cartridge — Which Should You Prioritize?
Disposable vapes lead the market in New York, and it's easy to see why: no battery needed, grab-and-go convenience, perfect for trying new brands. Nearly all are slim-format pens in a single flavor (dual-flavor options are essentially nonexistent here).
510 cartridges, however, remain stronger in New York than in most other states. If you already own a battery, carts offer better value per gram and more flexibility. Pod systems (Eureka, Plugplay, ROVE) exist but are a niche.
Size-wise, 1g is king. Its share of the disposable market jumped from 59% to 79% in just one year. The 0.5g format is fading fast. The emerging format to watch: 1.5g disposables are appearing and gaining traction, with more value and a slightly larger pen.
Which Brands Are Actually Worth Your Money
The top 10 vape brands hold nearly half the entire market. Here's a quick orientation:
Jaunty (#1) is the quintessential New York brand, founded locally, focused locally, and proudly not part of a multi-state operation.
Ayrloom (#2) is the cannabis arm of a century-old apple orchard family and leans almost entirely on disposables.
ROVE (#3) brings California prestige and sits firmly in the premium tier.
Fernway (#4), out of Massachusetts, has won over New York consumers with quality live resin products.
MFNY (#5) is Hudson Valley-rooted and cart-heavy — the "made in New York, seed to sale" option.
Price tiers at a glance: Heavy Hitters, ROVE, and Brass Knuckles own the premium shelf. PAX, Fernway, and Eureka sit mid-to-premium. Ayrloom, NY Honey, and Sapphire Farms offer solid value without sacrificing quality.
